Can mesenchymal stem cell therapy be the interim management of COVID-19?

Abstract: novel coronavirus disease, SARS-CoV-2, cytokine storm, MSC-therapy COVID-19 pandemic has accounted for ~ 4.3 million confirmed cases and ~ 292,000 deaths (till 12 th May, 2020) across the globe since its outbreak. Several anti-viral drugs such as RNA dependent RNA polymerase inhibitors (remdesivir, favipiravir, ribavirin), protease inhibitors (lopinavir, ritonavir) and drugs targeting endocytic pathway (hydroxychloroquine) are being evaluated for COVID-19 but standard therapeutics yet not available. Severe hea… Show more

“…These findings are in line with the previous reports. [18][19][20] However, the role of the inflammatory response in liver damage of COVID-19 infected patients demands further investigation. Mitigation of the cytokine storms through clinical treatment remains crucial in the prognosis of patients with severe COVID-19 infection.…”

“…Currently, stem cell therapy has become a promising therapeutic field, which is showing various opportunities to cure incurable diseases 43 . MSCs has called for attention due to source potential, a high proliferation rate, the need of a less invasive procedure, and free of ethical issues.…”
