Can't wait to lose weight? Characterizing temporal discounting parameters for weight-loss

Abstract: Obesity is often related to steeper temporal discounting, that is, higher decision impulsivity for immediate rewards over delayed rewards. However, previous studies have measured temporal discounting parameters through monetary rewards. The aim of this study was to develop a temporal discounting measure based on weight-loss rewards, which may help to understand decision-making mechanisms more closely related to body weight regulation. After having their heights and weights measured, healthy young adults comple… Show more

“…The 27‐item monetary choice questionnaire (M‐M) was used to measure delay discounting of monetary rewards . A monetary and weight choices questionnaire (M‐W) modelled after the monetary choice questionnaire and weight loss choice questionnaire was used to measure cross commodity discounting of immediate monetary and delayed weight loss rewards. In both tasks, participants are presented with a set of choices between smaller immediate rewards and larger delayed rewards.…”

“…Previous obesity research has primarily employed single commodity discounting of monetary , weight loss or food rewards . However, many daily choices a person must make to lose weight involve foregoing the preferred immediate reward for the delayed reward of weight loss.…”

“…Reviews suggest that delay discounting could be a promising predictive measure of health behavior, as high discount rates for money are associated with several unhealthy behaviors and markers of health status . At this time, there is an emerging relation between delay discounting and weight loss ; however, the data on a relation between delay discounting and BMI is mixed .…”
