Cancer stem cells and evolving novel therapies: a paradigm shift

Abstract: Accumulating evidence of stem-like cells/cancer stem cells (CSCs) has been gaining attention of cancer researchers over the last decade. Though many tumors harbor CSCs in their dedicated niches, identifying and exterminating those cells has proved to be difficult, due to their heterogenous nature, as the CSC phenotype vary substantially and may undergo reversible phenotypic changes. As a tumor propagation initiator, CSCs are considered as an exciting novel therapy for a better therapeutic outcome. This review … Show more

“…Malignancy remains one of the most difficult to treat and serious diseases globally, resulting from unscheduled and unregulated cell proliferation. Furthermore, the methods of cancer treatment in recent decades including surgery, radiotherapy and conventional chemotherapy have not greatly reduced the rate of mortality in patients [45] with significant side effects present. Currently there is a requirement for a paradigm shift in treatment options with novel approaches at the forefront of innovative needs.…”

“…Bacteriocins offer many advantages for therapeutic application including their small size, biocompatibility, biodegradable and mostly non-immunogenic nature [45]. Issues arise, however, relating to bacteriocin stability, solubility, large-scale production and purification in sufficient quantities for general medical use.…”

“…To determine the minimal inhibitory concentrations of lactic acid bacteria and other antagonist microorganisms isolated from natural sources of Kaliningrad region (soil, water bodies, plant objects) and being bacteriocins, primary and secondary metabolites were isolated by centrifugation [18]. In the first stage, the liquid nutrient medium was centrifuged at a rotor speed of 10,000 rpm for 20 min, the supernatant was separated and then filtered through 22 µm filters (Millipore, USA) into sterile tubes.…”

“…Despite the increasing successes in some areas, the traditional treatments for most cancers are facing to increasing limitations. In spite of the availability of various methods for cancer treatments nowadays, which includes chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, the rate of mortality remains consistent with significant side effects [58]. Globally, malignancy resulting from abnormal cells divisions and uncontrolled cell proliferation is one of the most difficult disease areas to treat.…”
