Cancer stereotypes: A multidimensional scaling analysis

Abstract: The body of empirical research investigating the structure of stereotypes held by the physically healthy population toward individuals with medically related problems is remarkably small. This is particularly true for stereotypes related to cancer. This study adopted a multidimensional scaling (MDS) strategy in order to identify medically related stereotype dimensions for cancer and other illnesses. Sixty-eight subjects judged the similarity of cancer and eleven other medical conditions and rated each on 7-poi… Show more

“…Notably, this dimension has not been included in attribution models (e.g., Kelley, 1973;Weiner, 1986) and has not emerged from empirical analyses of causal explanations for achievement and interpersonal behavior (e.g., Meyer, 1980;Passer, 1977;Russell, 1982;Wimer et al, 1982). It has emerged, however, in multidimensional scaling analyses of medical conditions (Avis, 1984;Rounds and Zevon, 1993;Schmelkin et al, 1988). This supports F6rsterling's (1988) contention that the salient characteristics of attributions will be, to a certain extent, domain dependent.…”

“…Not only has it been used in the domain of physical illness (Rounds and Zevon, 1993;Schmelkin et al, 1988), disability (Schmelkin, 1982(Schmelkin, , 1985, pain (Wack and Turk, 1984), and cardiac disease (Avis, 1984), it has also been used to identify the dimensions along which people distinguish among different forms of psychopathology (Paquin and Jackson, 1981). We know of no research to date using MDS to examine the psychologically meaningful dimensions underlying causes of physical symptoms.…”
