Candels Multi-Wavelength Catalogs: Source Detection and Photometry in the Goods-South Field

Abstract: We present a UV-to-mid infrared multi-wavelength catalog in the CANDELS/GOODS-S field, combining the newly obtained CANDELS HST/WFC3 F105W, F125W, and F160W data with existing public data. The catalog is based on source detection in the WFC3 F160W band. The F160W mosaic includes the data from CANDELS deep and wide observations as well as previous ERS and HUDF09 programs. The mosaic reaches a 5σ limiting depth (within an aperture of radius 0. 17) of 27.4, 28.2, and 29.7 AB for CANDELS wide, deep, and HUDF regio… Show more

“…First, we used SExtractor (Bertin et al 1996) on the processed H160 image with a revised HOT+COLD approach (Galametz et al 2013;Guo et al 2013). We then added the additional objects detected in a median average of the Y105+ J125+ JH140+ H160 bands, which are undetected in the H band.…”

“…The magnified number counts are shown in Fig. 7 compared with total number counts from CANDELS GOODS-South (Guo et al 2013) and UDS (Galametz et al 2013) surveys normalized to FF area. For magnitudes brighter then H160 = 26 mag, the number counts are consistent with the CANDELS counts once magnification is taken into account and when sources with z phot within 0.1 the redshift of the relative cluster are removed.…”

“…The template-fitting approach has been demonstrated to work well for blank-field surveys such as CANDELS (Guo et al 2013), but it does require images with zero mean background. Most galaxy cluster fields have considerable spatial variations in local sky background, so subtracting a constant background does not generally work.…”

“…In order to obtain multiwavelength photometry for these galaxies, we cross-matched this sample with the public Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS; Grogin et al 2011;Koekemoer et al 2011) catalog for the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey South field (GOODS-S) obtained by Guo et al (2013). This catalog contains photometry in 17 broadbands, from 0.37 through 8.0 μm, obtained with ground-and space-based telescopes, including HST and Spitzer (Ashby et al 2015).…”
