Cannulation for Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Abstract: Cardiac surgery has made significant progress since the advent of cardiopulmonary bypass. Arterial cannulation for bypass is a cornerstone to most cardiac procedures. Choosing an ideal cannulation site, employing peri-and intraoperative imaging, selecting an appropriate cannula, and avoiding complications are vital to success. These, along with the steps to arterial cannulation, are discussed in this chapter.

“…Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a standard procedure in cardiac surgery 1 , 2 . The distal ascending aorta is primarily chosen for cannulation, positioning the cannula close to the origin of the brachiocephalic trunk 2 , 3 . However, CPB is accompanied by a high incidence of neurological complications 4 , among which stroke is a major factor 5 , 6 : Generally, a 6% prevalence of stroke after cardiac surgery is reported 7 , of which 2–3% are associated specifically with CPB 8 , 9 .…”

“…[3] Cardiopulmonary bypass serves the purpose of acting in place of the patient's heart and lungs during a cardiac operative procedure. [4] Residents usually begin their operative journey in cardiac surgery by learning to put a patient on cardio-pulmonary bypass machine and basic surgery like ostium secundum atrial septal defect.…”
