This study aimed to identify the degree of dependence of institutionalized older adults in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It consists of a cross-sectional descriptive study, developed in three non-profit geriatric long-term care facilities in this municipality. The sample was comprised of 125 older adults and data were collected with the use of the Katz Index. Data were presented by descriptive and bivariate analysis. Independence was observed in 41.6% (n = 52), partial dependence in 15.2% (n = 19) and total dependence in 43.2% (n = 54). The elderly have better ability to perform feeding (86.4%, n = 108) and transferring (67.2%, n = 84) activities. Thus, this study suggests the need for continuous monitoring to prevent functional disability in this population group.

Objective: To assess the functional capacity and to determine the difference between the means of functional capacity (basic and instrumental activities of daily living) and the age groups of elderly residents in an outlying area in the hinterland of Bahia/Northeast of Brazil. Method: Analytical study with cross-sectional design and a sample of 150 elderly individuals enrolled in four Health Units in the municipality of Jequié, Bahia, Brazil. The instrument consisted of sociodemographic and health data, the Barthel Index and the Lawton scale. Results: In all, 78.00% of the elderly were classified as dependent in the basic activities and 65.33% in the instrumental activities of daily living. Using the KruskalWallis test, we found a statistically significant difference between the means of instrumental activities and the age groups (p=0.011). Conclusion: An elevated number of elderly were classified as dependent in terms of functional capacity and increased age is related to greater impairment in the execution of instrumental activities of daily living.

INTRODUÇÃO: O campo da fisioterapia domiciliar vem se ampliando por perceber a importância do contexto domiciliar para o cuidado de pacientes. Nesse ambiente, o fisioterapeuta faz uma avaliação e elabora um plano de cuidados continuados emitindo um diagnóstico físico-funcional em nível domiciliar, proporcionando maior conforto e praticidade para o paciente, que pode se encontrar em situação de restrição no leito ou de mobilidade para deslocar-se às clínicas especializadas. A abordagem de cuidados domiciliários vem exigir desse profissional o desenvolvimento de um olhar mais ampliado, que compreenda o contexto domiciliar e as nuances de relações parentais para implementar uma metodologia de cuidados conjunto com a família. Tal abordagem, no entanto, encontra dificuldades para sua fundamentação teórico-prática, graças à lacuna de conhecimento existente com a escassez de publicações sobre o tema nas principais bases de dados, o que dificulta a comprovação da eficácia desse serviço. OBJETIVOS: O objetivo deste trabalho é divulgar os resultados encontrados sobre o estado da arte nos cuidados fisioterapêuticos domiciliares. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Esta pesquisa apoiou-se em uma extensiva revisão de literatura no Portal de Periódicos Capes, nas bases BIREME, MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO e, também, Google Acadêmico, no período de dez anos (entre 1998 a 2008), usando os descritores família, domicílio, fisioterapia, domiciliar, physiotherapy, home care. RESULTADOS: Os resultados preliminares apontaram a necessidade de investigação nessa área e a relevância de se estudar o tema para os cuidados fisioterapêuticos domiciliares.
