Capillary and packed column SFC/MS

Abstract: SummaryA frit restrictor interface for capillary column supercritical fluid chromatography/mass spectrometry (SFC/MS) has been constructed and used for the analysis of high boiling point alkanes. Packed column SFC/MS is described using both a moving belt liquid chromatographic/mass spectrometric interface and a thermospray source in the filament-on mode.

“…It was already proven that SFC–MS could compete with LC–MS for the purpose of pharmaceuticals analysis . Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and ESI sources are both commonly used. The use of atmospheric pressure photo‐ionization was also reported .…”

“…The basic problems of interfacing supercritical fluid chromatography to mass spectrometry are intermediate between those of gas and liquid chromatography [70][71][72][73][74]. Nearly all current research in SFC utilizes either open tubular columns of very small internal diameter, 25-100 micrometers, or slurry packed capillary or small bore columns prepared for use in liquid chromatography.…”

“…For small bore packed column SFC/MS direct fluid introduction into a modified chemical ionization source, a particle beam interface, a modified filament on thermospray interface, and the moving belt interface have been used successfully [71][72][73][81][82][83]. The moving belt interface used in liquid chromatography requires only minor modification to the spray deposition device to avoid freezing of the nozzle for SFC/MS and can be used with mixed mobile phases [82].…”
