Carbohydrate-Active Enzymes: Structure, Activity, and Reaction Products

Abstract: Carbohydrate-active enzymes are responsible for both the biosynthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. They are involved in many metabolic pathways, in the biosynthesis and degradation of various biomolecules, such as bacterial exopolysaccharides, starch, cellulose, and lignin, and in the glycosylation of proteins and lipids. Their interesting reactions have attracted the attention of researchers belonging to different scientific fields ranging from basic research to biotechnology. Interest … Show more

“…Genome mining analysis using antiSMASH version 6.0 identified 16 putative gene clusters that may be responsible for the production of multiple secondary metabolites. Genome analysis using Cazymes database revealed that strain NEAU-24 T contained 235 carbohydrate-binding modules, 224 glycoside hydrolases (GHs), 135 glycosyl transferases [48], carbohydrate esterases and eight auxiliary activities. Carbohydrate-active enzymes are responsible for both the biosynthesis and breakdown of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates.…”

“…C. auriculariae specific-orthologous include genes encoding proteins with Ank (Ankyrin), TIL (Trypsin Inhibitor like cysteine rich domain), LEA_4 (Late embryogenesis abundant), GPCR (G protein-coupled receptors), Collagen, Pkinase (Protein kinase) and Apolipoprotein domains (Table S3), suggesting that genes of those functions are highly diverged in C. auriculariae and possibly reflecting its unique lifestyle though it has not been revealed yet. www.nature.com/scientificreports/ Carbohydrate-Active enzymes (CAZy) are involved in several biological processes, including feeding, energy metabolism, structural support, and signal transduction 13 . The repertories in the genome generally reflects its life style.…”

“…This provides future scope for the study of the host as an anti-aging microorganism. Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) are families of essential and structurally related enzymes, which catalyze the creation, modification, and degradation of glycosidic bonds in carbohydrates to maintain essentially all kingdoms of life (Benini, 2020). CAZymes play a key role in many biological processes underpinning human health and diseases (e.g., cancer, diabetes, AD, AIDS) and have thus emerged as important drug targets in the fight against pathogenesis (Williams, 2001;El Kaoutari et al, 2013;Montgomery et al, 2017).…”
