Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Sequestration: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Prospects for Global Decarbonization

Srinu Nagireddi,
Jatin R. Agarwal,
Damodaran Vedapuri

Abstract: This Review provides an in-depth overview of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) technologies and their potential in global decarbonization efforts. The Review discusses the concept of CO 2 utilization, including conversion to fuels, chemicals, and minerals as well as biological processes. It also explores the different types of CO 2 sequestration, including geological, ocean, and mineral storage, and the associated challenges and opportunities such as regulatory issues and pu… Show more

“…Fluorine oil is used to circulate around the core holder to control the experimental temperature, and the annular pressure pump is used for pressure feedback adjustment to simulate the highpressure environment of the formation. 2 ⃝ Fluid displacement simulation system. This is made up of a constant speed fluid pump (ISCO pump), a core device, a gas-liquid separation device, and other components that can move oil, water, gas, and other multi-phase fluids.…”

“…Within the framework of global climate change, the frequent prevalence of extreme climate events has led to a shared concern among the worldwide community over the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions [1][2][3]. The Paris Agreement establishes a target of limiting global warming to a maximum of 2 • C. The technology known as CO 2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is recognized as a crucial means to accomplish this objective [4].…”

“…Anthropogenic activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes, have led to a significant increase in CO 2 emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change. 1–3 The International Energy Agency predicted that CO 2 emissions will reach 40.3 Gt by 2030 and will grow to 50 Gt in 2050 if not restrained. 4,5 Addressing this issue requires innovative strategies for mitigating CO 2 levels while simultaneously transitioning towards a sustainable energy economy.…”

“…7 However, current CO2 absorption materials face challenges such as high costs and synthetic difficulties, and approaches for CO2 utilization exhibit low conversion efficiencies. 8 To produce hydrogels from cellulose, it's essential to control the dissolution and regeneration processes of cellulose. However, cellulose is insoluble in water and most common organic solvents due to numerous intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds.…”
