Carbon Dioxide Fixation in Sugarcane Leaves

Abstract: Sugarcane is one of the most efficient 1plants for producing carbohydrates by photosynthesis (12); it is therefore of great interest to compare its photosynthetic cycle with that of other plants. Our preliminary experiments (not reported here), in which sections of sugarcane blades were exposed to C1402 for periods up to 15 seconds showed that the radioactivity in 3-phosphoglyceric acid (PGA) was never over 34 % of the total activity incorporated. In no case was this as much as the sum of the activities in mal… Show more

“…The percentage of distribution of radioactivity in aspartate, malate, 3-PGA, sucrose, and unidentified compounds was 22, 62, 7, 7, and 2%, respectively in sugarcane, which agreed with the results of Kortschak, Hartt, and Burr (18). In bermudagrass, the percentage of distribution of radioactivity was 54, 33, 4, 1, and 8%, respectively (Fig.…”

“…The more recently described pathway coupled to P-pyruvate carboxylase (20,14), however, has proved to be widely distributed also (15,17). Surveys of assimilatory capacity have generally indicated a substantially greater rate of net assimilation in plants with the latter pathway.…”

“…The initial determination that C4-dicarboxylic acids were the primary photosynthetic products in a higher plant was made by Kortschak et al (6). This photosynthetic carbon-fixation pathway is now known to occur in many angiosperm taxa, and specific aspects of the pathway have received considerable attention (5).…”
