Carbon Dioxide Pretreatment and Cold Storage Synergistically Delay Tomato Ripening through Transcriptional Change in Ethylene-Related Genes and Respiration-Related Metabolism

Abstract: The effects of CO2 pretreatment before cold storage on tomato quality were investigated using physicochemical and transcriptome changes. Harvested tomatoes were treated with 30% or 60% CO2 for 3 h before storage at 4 °C for 14 d (cold storage), followed by transfer to 20 °C for 8 d (ambient conditions). The CO2-treated fruits were firmer with a better appearance than untreated fruits, even after being transferred from 4 °C storage to 20 °C for 8 d. CO2 pretreatment coupled with cold storage synergistically del… Show more

“…Some metabolism changes may be synergistically influenced by PEITC along with AITC. Previously, pathway analysis revealed new metabolism insight to postharvest storage, drought stress, and AITC treated mature lettuce [37,40,41]. Tyrosine metabolism, isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism were also identified as significantly changed metabolism by pathway analysis.…”

“…The analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome of tomato cv. Defunis evidenced an important role of the ethylene and flavonoid metabolism in cold response (Park et al, 2021). In Micro-Tom tomato, metabolome analysis showed that fermentative metabolism and accumulation of amino acids (e.g., glutamic acid and glutamine) and GABA are activated by cold stress.…”

“…Another study in tomato fruit showed that cold stress induced the metabolism reprogramming: for example, the biosynthesis of amino acids, flavonoids, and pentose phosphate pathway is induced, whereas variations in the content of organic acids and sugars, depending on the time and storage condition, are described (Zhang et al, 2019). Some treatments used to induce CI tolerance in tomato fruit include the application of hot water treatment (HWT) (Cárdenas-Torres et al, 2020;, melatonin (Jannatizadeh et al, 2019), carbon dioxide (Park et al, 2021), and phenylalanine (Aghdam et al, 2019). HWT is relatively easy to apply at a low cost.…”

“…Ethylene and auxin play critical roles in fruit ripening [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. At the transcript level, various transcription factors act as important regulators in the auxin and ethylene signaling pathways and regulate fruit ripening.…”
