Carbon dots: materials, synthesis, properties and approaches to long-wavelength and multicolor emission

Abstract: In this mini review, we briefly summarized the raw materials, synthesis and typical properties of CDs and ways to realize long-wavelength and multicolor emission including surface state and size controlled by synthesis strategies, proper precursors, chemical doping and modification, solvatochromic effects and energy transfer.

“…Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of luminescent material, have drawn extensive attention during the past decade . Scientists have made great efforts to develop this material, and now, CDs can be easily fabricated from abundant low‐cost sources with green methods, and exhibit excellent photostability and low cytotoxicity, especially the amazing photoluminescence (PL) . However, the PL mechanisms of CDs are controversial and the formation processes of CDs also remain unclear.…”

“…During the past few years, much progress has been made in the synthesis, properties, and applications of CDs, as reviewed by Baker et al., Lee et al., Ray et al., Lim et al., Zhu et al., Zuo et al., Wang et al., Wu et al., Fernando et al., Zhu et al., and Wang et al . Many people pay attention to only the nature and application of CDs, ignoring the importance of carbon sources.…”
