Carbonate Fuel Cell Matrix and Electrolyte Developments

Abstract

The carbonate fuel cell matrix and electrolyte are important components for performance and life stability. Significant improvements were achieved in the areas of matrix pore structure, manufacturing and electrolyte chemistry. These efforts have enabled extending cell life and reducing cost. The optimization of electrolyte composition showed 40 mV performance improvement at low temperatures and >55% reduction of NiO dissolution compared to baseline design. Investigations on electrolyte compositions, electrolyte additives and stable matrix materials continue to further enhance cell life.
