Carboxylic Acid Ionic Modification of Castor‐Oil‐Based Polyurethanes Bearing Amine Groups: Chemically Tunable Physical Properties and Recyclability

Abstract: A family of supramolecular side-chain ionic polyurethanes (PUs) is synthesized by a simple method using polyurethanes with tertiary amines as pendant groups, and carboxylic acids. The resulting polyurethanes contain diethyl ammonium and carboxylate moieties that are bonded by a combination of ionic and hydrogen bonds. The self-assembling process is observed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The synthesized polyur… Show more

“…The infrared spectra of saturated fatty acids (sFA) have been studied and their features have been previously reported [ 106 , 107 , 108 , 109 , 110 , 111 ]. In particular, studies for C8:0–C18:0 [ 112 , 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 ] may provide powerful identification tools.…”

“…The presence of these bands supports the formation of antiparallel β‐sheet like arrangements in both hydrogels. ,[21] Peaks at 1733 and 1676 cm −1 correspond to the C=O stretching bands for protonated carboxylic acids and residual carboxylate anions respectively [22] . The formation of β‐sheet in both cases was confirmed by Circular Dichroism (CD) spectra (Figure S3).…”

“…, [21] Peaks at 1733 and 1676 cm À 1 correspond to the C=O stretching bands for protonated carboxylic acids and residual carboxylate anions respectively. [22] The formation of β-sheet in both cases was confirmed by Circular Dichroism (CD) spectra (Figure S3). Both solutions (Pep-A and a 1 : 4 mixture of Pep-A and Pep-B in pH 6.5 buffer) showed a characteristic negative cotton effect at 220 nm.…”

“…Apart from adsorption maxima at 1200 cm −1 (1199 cm −1 for trifluoracetic acid and 1224 cm −1 for modified fly ash), characteristic for the -CF3 group, the shift of the absorption band characteristic for the carbonyl group in CF3-CO-O- from 1785 cm −1 to 1680 cm −1 corresponds to the conversion of free trifluoroacetic acid into its salt, which is also visible. This is additionally confirmed by the disappearance of the wide band with the maximum at 3423 cm −1 , characteristic for the -OH groups present in carboxylic acids [ 38 ].…”
