Carcinoma Cuniculatum Originating from Intertriginous Lesions

Abstract: Three cases of long-standing carcinoma cuniculatum originating from intertriginous lesions, which resembled athlete's foot in their initial stages, were reported. The authors suggest cutaneous malignancy to be considered in the differential diagnosis of intertriginous lesions unresponsive to usual therapeutic measures.

“…Carcinoma cuniculatum has been described in various sites such as esophagus, 10 jaw, 2 oropharynx, 16 sacrum, 9 oral cavity, 11 nasal cavity and sinuses, 27 buttock, 19 hands, 5 toes, 13 thumb, 4 abdominal wall, 17 and intertriginous areas. 20 They were also reported in association with leprosy, 21,24 pilonidal cysts, necrobiosis lipoidica, 23 and chronic skin ulcers. 12 The nomenclature and morphologic definition of carcinoma cuniculatum used in many of these reports is not uniform.…”
