“…Different degrees of positive correlations between diastolic function and anthropometric measurements (WAZ, HAZ, WHZ, MUAC) after rehabilitation were detected. Recently, Spaulding et al, 2016 reported that children with severe malnutrition suffer cardiac muscle wasting and ventricular dysfunction that responds well to nutritional rehabilitation therapy, also Nagla et al, 2010 concluded that nutritional rehabilitation reverses cardiac abnormalities significantly [3,24].…”

“…Patients with severe PEM have multiple nutritional deficiencies, anaemia and frequent intercurrent illnesses. Moreover, PEM involves tissue protein all over the body causing severe wasting of skeletal muscles including but less severely the heart muscles [2,3]. These may variably influence the cardiac function [4] and may result in an inherent ventricular dysfunction [3].…”

“…AN is an eating disorder that individuals experience to different extents, from being on a diet and deliberately inducing weight loss to deliberately and dramatically reducing body weight to far below healthy levels (79). The primary symptoms of AN are an excessive attention to weight and body image, intense fear of gaining weight, obsessive pursuit of thinness and significant reduction in weight.…”

“…Moreover, patients suffering from AN are characterised by neuroendocrine, immune, and autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation resulting in cardiovascular complications and potentially leading to increased morbidity and mortality [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Cardiovascular complications occur in up to 80% of patients with AN, and account for up to 30% of mortality [ 6 ]. For example, sinus bradycardia (i.e., resting heart rate less than 50 beats per minute), relatively low arterial blood pressure (hypotension usually lower than 100/50 mmHg), prolonged QT interval, atherosclerosis, etc.…”
