Cardiac spiral dual-source CT with high pitch: a feasibility study

Abstract: Increase of pitch in spiral CT decreases data acquisition time; dual-source CT (DSCT) systems provide improved temporal resolution. We evaluated the combination of these two features. Measurements were performed using a commercial DSCT system equipped with prototype software allowing pitch factors from p = 0.35 to 3.0. We measured slice sensitivity profiles as a function of pitch to assess spatial resolution in the z-direction and the contrast of structures moved periodically to measure temporal resolution. “…However, one disadvantage of CT with lower tube voltage is the parallel increase in image noise [32,33] shows an increase in image noise in cCTA studies obtained at 100 kV in comparison to the standard 120 kV protocol [28,34,35]. Most recently a promising new technique of high pitch spiral acquisition in coronary CT angiography was introduced and showed dose levels around 0,97-2.1 mSv in the initial experience [36,37].…”

“…In the October issue of European Radiology in 2009, Ertel and colleagues [1] described a spiral computed tomography (CT) technique employing a very high table feed (and pitch) for a fast data acquisition of the heart. The authors performed experiments in three pigs using a first-generation dual-source CT machine equipped with prototype software allowing pitch factors up to 3.0.…”

“…High pitch CT has also been trialled on early DCST equipment using dedicated software (commercially unavailable as yet) and demonstrated unimpaired image quality with respect to spatial and temporal resolution [33].…”
