Cardioprotection by Adiponectin

Abstract: Obesity-related disorders are closely associated with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Adiponectin is a circulating adipose tissue-derived hormone that is down-regulated in obese individuals. Hypoadiponectinemia has been identified as an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, and hypertension, and experimental studies show that adiponectin plays a protective role in the development of insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and inflammation. More recent findings have show… Show more

“…Numerous epidemiological studies have demonstrated the correlation between reduced APN levels and increased risk of cardiovascular disease in obese and diabetic individuals (1,19). APN deficiency is an independent risk factor for endothelial dysfunction, hypertension, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, and other cardiovascular complications (13).…”

“…Many recent findings have suggested that adiponectin is able to influence cardiac remodeling in pathologic states, limiting the progression of myocardial hypertrophy (75). Other beneficial effects of adiponectin at the cardiac level are the protective actions against myocardial ischemiareperfusion (75) and the protection against the development of systolic dysfunction after myocardial infarction observed in mice (76).…”

“…Adiponectin is a hormone produced by the white adipose tissue and is released directly into the blood, where its levels are within the range 0.5-30 μg/mL with a total concentration of 0.01% of the total plasma proteins [1]. It belongs to the same group of adipokines as leptin, TNF-α, plasminogen activator inhibitor, adipsin and resistin [2]. It is a collagen-like protein, which shows similarities with collagen type VIII and X [1].…”
