Cardiovascular and catecholamine response to surgery in brain‐dead organ donors

Abstract: SummaryEleven brain-dead organ donors were studied during surgery. Plasma levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline were measured before and after skin incision, upon sternotomy and 15, 30 and 45min thereafter. Haemodynamic changes were measured continuously throughout the observation period. Blood pressure and heart rate increased after skin incision, remained high at sternotomy then decreased towarak the end of the observation period in six of the 11 patients. Plasma catecholamines increasedpromptly with the on… Show more

“…They also note that technical advances in preservation solutions and procedures have facilitated shortened warm ischemic times and improved quality of organs retrieved from donors. 15 Now let' s look at one case, which I observed as a nursing student, that illustrates some tough ethical dilemmas. 12 Issues surrounding brain death But defining death as brain death also presents ethical quandaries.…”

“…16 Also, during the early stages of organ removal lacrimation is a common phenomenon. 45 According to Gray's Anatomy, 'Preganglionic fibres probably arise from a special lacrimatory nucleus in the lower pons y These fibres synapse in the pterygopalatine ganglion which they leave in one of its branches y, to reach the lacrimal nerve. Thus they supply secromotor fibres to the gland'.…”
