Cardiovascular mortality in a Swedish cohort of female industrial workers exposed to noise and shift work

Abstract: Purpose The aim was to study mortality due to cardiovascular disease as well as total mortality, among female industrial workers, and the association to occupational noise and shift work. Methods Women from cohorts of soft tissue paper mills (N = 3013) and pulp and paper mills (N = 1483) were merged into one cohort. Job exposure matrices were developed and used for classification of shift work and noise exposure. Every year was classified as shift work excluding nights or shift work including nights. Noise was… Show more

“…The magnitude of effect however, is dependent on noise intensity, duration, and type, as well as personal sensitivity 33 . Increased cardiovascular risks have also been noted for groups exposed to high levels of noise including mining, 35 trucking, 36 construction, 37 metal manufacturing, 38 and pulp and paper mills, 39 supporting important associations in our study. Workers should be educated about the harmful impacts of noise, and the use of hearing protection equipment to minimize potential workplace hazards.…”

“…In addition to the immediate disruption of the circadian rhythm and implications for sleep quality [ 5 ], an extensive list of recent research results shows that these consequences interfere in numerous areas of human functionality, namely the following in the area of physical health: the risk of breast cancer [ 6 ], chronic fatigue, sleep problems and social jetlag [ 7 , 8 , 9 ], obesity and overweight [ 10 ], metabolic syndrome [ 11 ], carcinogenicity [ 12 ], increased cortisol secretion [ 13 ], use of psychotropic medication [ 14 ], vascular endothelial dysfunction and platelet activation [ 15 ], hypertension [ 16 ], cardiovascular mortality [ 17 ], obstructive sleep apnea [ 18 ], diabetes mellitus [ 19 , 20 ], women’s menopausal age and menstrual years [ 21 ], abnormal liver function [ 22 ], and overall chronic diseases [ 23 ].…”
