Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Greek Adolescents with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Its Relationship with Body Mass Index

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine condition affecting 6–18% of adolescents and is strongly associated with obesity and cardiovascular risk factors, enhancing the risk of atherosclerosis. Thirty-two adolescents with newly diagnosed PCOS were evaluated for lipid profile disorders, insulin resistance, inflammation, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and subclinical atherosclerosis through measurements of carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT). The relationships of the above mark… Show more

“…Although the association between NAFLD and PCOS has been widely studied in adults, liver manifestations in adolescents with PCOS are largely unaddressed in the current literature. There are only seven original studies examining hepatic steatosis exclusively in adolescent patients [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Hepatic fibrosis has been assessed only in one study of PCOS patients, which included an adolescent sample [ 24 ].…”

“…Hepatic fibrosis has been assessed only in one study of PCOS patients, which included an adolescent sample [ 24 ]. Regarding the Greek population, NAFLD has been studied only in two adult PCOS samples and one adolescent sample [ 21 , 25 , 26 ]. Acknowledging this gap in the literature as well as PCOS’ metabolic implications and its comparable pathogenesis with NAFLD, we aimed to assess NAFLD and its risk factors in adolescents with PCOS.…”

“…Continuous screening has focused on reducing possible remotely associated complications in the vasculature. Increased intima-media thickness (IMT) of the arterial walls associated with IR [5,6] is one of the screening methods. The atherogenic milieu among PCOS women causes widespread premature atherosclerosis in virtually every artery in the body [7].…”
