Career Length and Performance Among Professional Baseball Players Returning to Play After Hip Arthroscopy

Abstract: Professional baseball players undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAI returned to sport and had similar performance as they did before injury. The average career length was 9.5 years. In our study cohort, more pitchers than position players underwent hip arthroscopy. Hip arthroscopy appears to be an effective surgical intervention, allowing for return to play after complete recovery.

“…Excellent short-term outcomes have been described in athletes with return to sport for recreational and high school or college athletes being 94% and 88% respectively [27]. Additionally there is high rate of return to sport for professional baseball, football, and basketball players [28][29][30]. Even in workers' compensation patients, nearly 70% are able to return to work without restrictions and demonstrated similar magnitude of improvement in outcome scores to a control cohort [31].…”

“…Professional, collegiate, and international athletes typically have performance outcomes recorded in public databases, while there exist little comparable data on the performance of recreational athletes. 1,2,5,11,33 Other potential differences must also be considered. The motivation to return to competition is likely to differ between patients whose financial livelihoods depend on performance and those participating for social, physical, and mental benefits alone.…”

“…These findings are consistent with existing literature, which supports high return to sport and good performance in professional athletes following hip arthroscopy. [2][3][4][5][6] In The Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell asserts that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any field. 7 Professional athletes possess an unparalleled amount of determination, will, and resilience, which not only place them in the elite few, but also keep them at the highest level year after year.…”
