Carotenoids from heterotrophic bacteria isolated from Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica

Abstract: HighlightsScreening of bacteria producing carotenoid in sub Antarctic region.Identification of 10 carotenoids by chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis.Salinibacterium sp. and Cryobacterium sp. were identified as new carotenoid sources.C.p.450 monoglucoside was identified in Planoccous isolates. All isolates could be potential sources for carotenoid production.

“…Although humans must obtain carotenoids from the diet, some microbes in the environment have been shown to synthesize carotenoids for protection against oxidative damage (Saejung & Ampornpat, 2019; Vila, Hornero‐Méndez, Azziz, Lareo, & Saravia, 2019). Therefore, it is plausible to consider that some of the biological effects that carotenoids have in humans may be related to the activities of the gut microbiota, but this has neither been adequately studied nor demonstrated within the literature (Lyu, Wu, Wang, Shen, & Lin, 2018).…”

“…TDMA-8 (1.1 mg/gdb), and two strains of Sphingomonas genus—TDMA-16 (1.7 mg/gdb) and TDMA-17 (2.8 mg/gdb). On the other hand, Vila et al [ 45 ] examined strains isolated from King George Island for carotenoid production. In this study, the production of carotenoids oscillated around 0.5 mg/gdb for Planococcus sp.…”

“…From this multiple alignment result, the final phylogenetic tree was constructed using the bootstrap method by the neighbor-joining algorithm in MEGA7 software. For the construction of the phylogenetic tree, an out-group was considered as Staphylococcus aureus df5 (LN929744) [ [47] , [48] , [49] ].…”
