Carotid intima-media thickness is a novel predictor of new onset of hypertension in normotensive subjects

Abstract: Increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in individuals without hypertension might indicate other factors promoting the atherosclerotic process that are often simultaneously clustered in individuals. The present study tested the hypothesis that carotid IMT predicts new onset of hypertension in the normotensive subjects.A total of 867 participants were enrolled from our yearly physical checkup program and their carotid IMT was measured. After a baseline examination, the subjects were followed up for a med… Show more

“…Being consistent with our findings, meta-analysis of Liu et al including 16 studies with 41 931 adults has shown that TC, LDL-C, and TG levels were significantly increased and HDL-C level was not significantly different in SCH patients compared with EU individuals [61]. In addition, hypertension is strongly associated with endothelial function and C-IMT can predict the development of hypertension [62]. Noisy living environment contribute to the prevalence of hypertension [63].…”

“…Subgroup results of studies found that the sources of high heterogeneity were not age and sample size. In the past few decades, a large number of studies have described the deep relationship between hypertension and CIMT, and hypertension patients usually have a higher CIMT [32][33][34]. However, the results of our subgroup analysis showed that CIMT was increased in both patients and controls with hypertension and the general population.…”

“…Atherosclerosis examinations are widely performed, and CAVI and carotid IMT are representatives of functional and morphological assessments in large muscular and elastic arteries [17][18][19][20][21][22][23] . The usefulness of atherosclerotic examinations has been established not only in individuals with progressive atherosclerosis in clinical settings, but also in the asymptomatic general population at health check-ups 19,20,23,[32][33][34][35] . The ability to detect subclinical atherosclerosis in asymptomatic individuals is not so great with a single examination, though it could be improved by combining the examinations.…”
