Cascading ecological effects caused by the establishment of the emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in European Russia

Abstract: Emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis, is a destructive invasive forest pest in North America and European Russia. This pest species is rapidly spreading in European Russia and is likely to arrive in other countries soon. The aim is to analyze the ecological consequences of the establishment of this pest in European Russia and investigate (1) what other xylophagous beetles develop on trees affected by A. planipennis, (2) how common is the parasitoid of the emerald ash borer Spathius polonicus (Hymenoptera: Br… Show more

“…In Western Russia, A. convexicollis has also been collected from EAB‐infested, declining green ash ( Fraxinus pennsylvanica L.) trees (Orlova‐Bienkowskaja, ; Orlova‐Bienkowskaja & Volkovitsh, ). As our results indicate that MULTz traps are suitable for trapping A. convexicollis, they may have a practical benefit in future monitoring surveys for this species, which is common in stressed but living hosts all over Europe (Muskovits & Hegyessy, ).…”

“…The first parasitoid native to Europe was found only in 2013 by Orlova‐Bienkowskaja and Belokobylskij (): Spathius polonicus Niezabitowski (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Doryctinae) is an ectoparasitoid on EAB larvae with parasitism rates as high as 50% in European Russia (Orlova‐Bienkowskaja and Belokobylskij ; Orlova‐Bienkowskaja ).…”

“…Similar numbers of ash‐dependent species are to be expected in other parts of Europe. In European Russia, the establishment of EAB has resulted in a cascade of ecological effects, such as outbreaks of other xylophagous beetles on EAB‐infested trees (Orlova‐Bienkowskaja ).…”

“…The emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is a forest pest that has spread rapidly and has caused large‐scale destruction within the naïve populations of ash ( Fraxinus spp., Oleaceae) that occur in North America and European Russia (Herms & McCullough, ; Orlova‐Bienkowskaja, ). This exotic buprestid was first discovered in North America in 2002 in southeastern Michigan, USA, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada (Haack et al., ), though it was likely introduced sometime in the 1990s (Siegert et al., ).…”
