Case-control study for clinical findings on intraocular lens opacity

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical features of patients related to opacification of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses, four years after surgery. METHODS: We evaluated six cases of late opacification of Ioflex intraocular lenses (case group) compared to 24 patients (control group) with no opacification. Both groups underwent phacoemulsification as a result of a community campaign for underprivileged people. Patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery had only the right eye included on the study. The pat… Show more

“…[1c,2] The occurrence frequency of PCO 1 to 5 years after surgery is nearly 100% for children as well as 10%–70% for adults. [1a,3] So far, neodymium‐doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment is the most widely used method for prevention of PCO . However, it brings obvious financial burden to the health care system and causes complications such as rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and cystoid macular edema, etc .…”

“…[209,210] Notably, the incidence of this ocular disorder to five years after operation is nearly 100% for children and as well as 10-70% for adults. [208,211] Therefore, measures such as surface modification technologies of anti-adhesion [212,213] should be employed to engineering the IOP transducer implanted in capsular bags.…”

“…These results may be compared to a recently described epidemiological study of rural population in the state of Pernambuco. 23 This, in itself shows the need to facilitate the access of this population to cataract surgery by decentralizing social services and by developing community projects to prevent blindness. 11,13,24,25 The main limitation of this paper is the fact that the data is old, because the Project was conducted in 2001.…”
