Case Report: Onset of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in a Patient With Ulcerative Colitis and Sjogren’s Syndrome Under Euthyroid Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Abstract: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is often complicated with some other autoimmune disorders. The complication of various autoimmune disorders is known as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS). Once autoimmune thyroid disease develops, various autoimmune diseases can also occur. Such phenomena are classified as APS types 3A to 3D. In this report, we show the onset of T1DM in a patient with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Sjogren’s syndrome. The most important and interesting point in this case is that, if we did no… Show more

“…Para confirmar si la disminución en el nivel de GnH se debía a la disfunción pituitaria o a una disfunción secundaria del hipotálamo, realizamos la resonancia magnética de su glándula pituitaria, que mostró resultados normales. Hasta el momento, se ha identificado hipogonadismo secundario en algunos pacientes con SPA, pero la mayoría de ellos se consideraban causados por hipofisitis autoinmune (10)(11)(12) o mal control de la enfermedad de Hashimoto (13).…”

“…Further awareness of the risk of having new clinical entities across lifespan that are caused by common autoimmune pathogenic loops is mandatory [ 20 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 ]. On the other hand, the thyroid involvement is part of the extra-intestinal endocrine disease in ulcerative colitis [ 74 ]. To conclude, testing the panel of the autoimmune rheumatologic and gastroenterological conditions seems equally important in order to identify a non-endocrine condition such as polychondritis, autoimmune colitis, and systemic sclerosis that may be isolated or be part of an autoimmune poly-endocrine syndrome [ 12 , 20 ].…”
