Continuous communication and information technology advancements facilitate the modernization of the conventional energy grid into an integrated platform. Internet-of-Things (IoT) incorporates power systems, particularly smart grid features and the delivery of new services from the utility side to the end user over a two-way communication channel. However, severe security vulnerabilities have been created due to over-dependency on IoT based communication systems. In addition, critical information exchange between any two entities or devices is always an appealing target for cyber-attackers, especially with financial interest motive by damaging integrity, confidentiality and authenticity in a communication channel. Maintaining data security and preserving privacy in between two entities during the transmission or any data distribution are essential. The potential attacks and impacts of those attacks need to be investigated to develop an effective cyber security infrastructure. Thus, considerable researchers focused on detection and mitigation of these vulnerable cyber-attacks using advanced computation tools. This review article thoroughly investigated possible ways to address cyber security challenges such as smart meter security, end-users privacy, electricity theft cyber-attacks using blockchain and cryptography against communication attacks in smart grid. The operational impacts of cyber-attacks on power system security, as well as the economic impact on deregulated energy markets, have been extensively explored. In addition, the robustness of security features and cryptographic methods against various cyber-attacks is investigated to suggest unexplored cyber-attacks for future scope. Specially, the study of real-world cyber security events, case studies, new findings and new scopes in diverse power industries are carried out. More than 135 research articles has been examined for this review article. This paper mainly concentrates on distribution-side cyberattacks with impact analysis, detection and protection techniques.

This study presents a generalised critical infrastructures resilience model for extreme events with a focus on power grids. Infrastructures are modelled as three domains-physical, cyber, and human. Each domain is described with respect to the services it provides. Each domain is represented by geometric graphs for each service it provides. The resilience models use geometric graphs with each graph's nodes and edges characterised based on relevant attributes. This study also discusses various applied aspects related to resilience models including the impact of changing operating environment, human-driven processes, such as logistics, and service buffers. Due to their stated particular importance in the U.S. Presidential Policy Directive 21, particular attention is placed on the power infrastructure and its impact on the public communication infrastructures as a main critical load. This study focuses on the multi-time scale power system operation to capture cascading outages within, and subsequently to its dependent infrastructure-the public communication system (e.g. wireless or 'cellular' communication networks) as a main critical load. This study illustrates the merits of the proposed models in calculating resilience in extreme events and derives physical domain representation for electric and communication systems using cell tower and substation data from the USA.

To meet the increasing electricity demand and achieve the goals of “carbon peaking” and “carbon neutrality”, it is urgent to develop a new power system with new energy as the main body and large‐scale integration of power intelligent electronic devices. However, the large‐scale access to intelligent devices will bring new network security issues. In response to network security threats, a power grid network security situational awareness system is established to assess the security situation of the power grid and strengthen the network security. Cloud data sharing enables security monitoring data to flow faster and be fully used to facilitate security situational research and judgment. Nevertheless, in reality, issues such as privacy leakage, data tampering, and unauthorized access hinder the application of cloud data sharing. To solve the above problems, we propose a new secure sharing scheme for power system security monitoring data based on batch verification ring signature. In this scheme, we design a batch verification ring signature algorithm to guarantee users' anonymity and promote the efficiency of data sharing. Then, we formally prove that our scheme achieves three security features: anonymity, confidentiality, and unforgeability. Finally, experimental simulations show that our scheme's computational cost is less than half that of other schemes, which also has lower communication overhead.
