Casein improves brachial and central aortic diastolic blood pressure in overweight adolescents: a randomised, controlled trial

Abstract: Arterial stiffness, blood pressure (BP) and blood lipids may be improved by milk in adults and the effects may be mediated via proteins. However, limited is known about the effects of milk proteins on central aortic BP and no studies have examined the effects in children. Therefore, the present trial examined the effect of milk and milk proteins on brachial and central aortic BP, blood lipids, inflammation and arterial stiffness in overweight adolescents. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in 193 over… Show more

“…Sub-group analyses suggested that >20 g/d may be more effective, and the elevated baseline CRP level (≥3 mg/l) could be more responsive to whey or whey peptides consumption ( 133 ) . Similarly, Arnberg et al ( 35 ) reported no change in CRP in adolescence after whey, casein or skimmed milk consumption for 12 weeks.…”

“…In contrast, milk proteins may be protective for BP increases in overweight adolescents. Arnberg et al 129 demonstrated reductions of 1.8 mmHg (2.7%) in DBP of overweight adolescents following a 12-week intervention with casein protein. These results are consistent with adult studies demonstrating a 3% reduction in DBP following administration of casein.…”
