Casing failure mechanism during volume fracturing: A case study of shale gas well

Abstract: A large number of casing failures occur during the volume fracturing operation of shale gas, making normal completion stimulations impossible. To solve this problem, rock mechanical experiments and numerical simulation experiments are carried out in this article. It is found that the macroscopic rock mechanical strength reduces most when the crack angle of fissured rock in Longmaxi Formation is 45°, and it reduces stably when the number of cracks increases to 8. The elasticity modulus ratio, yield strength rat… Show more

“…According to Lian et al and Lin et al, stress deficiency is zero stress, and tension stress areas could produce “hanging” in the casing, resulting in partial radial deflection and axial S-shape deformation. 10 , 11 Tian et al and Yan et al discovered that the temperature of the retention fluid in the cement voids inside casings decreased sharply during hydraulic fracturing. 12 , 13 This, combined with the pressure drop inside the cement sheath voids, induced casing deformation.…”

“…The problem of casing failure has a critical effect on the working lifetime of oil and gas wells and restricts the efficiency mining of oil and gas and reservoir construction. There have been serious casing failure problems in conventional and unconventional oil and gas fields [1][2][3][4][5].…”
