Caste System of Stratification

Abstract

This entry defines the concept of caste systems of stratification, focusing on its distinguishing characteristics and origins in India. It describes the historical changes in the caste system from precolonial times to the present. Using the latest government data the article also examines the impact of the modern economy and a democratic political system—whether the caste system has disintegrated, and the extent of social mobility, and intercaste disparities in the country. It also, briefly discusses the similarities and differences of caste systems of stratification with class, race, and ethnic systems of stratification.
