Casting and Applications of Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites

Abstract: This chapter discusses the concepts, casting techniques and applications of functionally graded materials metal matrix composites (FGMMCs). Considerations were given to bulk functionally graded aluminium matrix composites (FGAACs) production processes. Liquid-metal forging processes of FGAACs fabrication, such as infiltration process, squeeze casting, friction casting or compocasting, stir, and centrifugal casting were discussed. The chapter provides basic concepts of the processes and overview of their proces… Show more

“…2,4 Particulate-reinforced composites due to their isotropic structure and low cost are widely preferred by industrial manufacturers. 5 By the way, SiC, 6 B 4 C, 7 Al 2 O 3 8 or TiC 9 are often used for the production of AMMCs reinforced with ceramic particulates. The TiC particles present good wettability with molten Al, high hardness, good wear resistance, and high specific strength.…”

“…Casting is a liquid state method of fabrication which involves the addition of a dispersed phase of the reinforcement material into the molten phase of the base metal and then the mixture is left to solidify. There are different casting techniques for producing nano-metal composites and include stir casting, squeeze casting, compocasting, centrifugal casting and friction casting (Ebhota & Jen, 2018). Stir casting has been reported as the most cost effective and simplest method of liquid state fabrication.…”

“…It is on this basis that some researchers have either adopted squeeze casting technique as is in Etter et al (2004) or a combined process of stir and squeeze casting as in El-Labban et al (2014). Squeeze casting technique, entails the solidification of liquid-metal under pressure in a closed die (Ebhota & Jen, 2018). Squeeze casting enhances densification and mechanical properties of metal composites (Ipekoglu et al, 2017;Soundararajan, Ramesh, Sivasankaran, & Vignesh, 2017).…”
