“…Despite the intensive and broad collecting efforts in the rio Madeira basin ( i.e ., Casatti et al ., 2013; Costa et al ., 2017; Pedroza et al ., 2012; Queiroz et al ., 2013; Vieira et al ., 2016) and several scientific expeditions conducted by various ichthyologists ( e.g ., researchers from MNRJ, MCP, MZUSP and UFRO) to the rivers draining the Chapada dos Parecis, C. nambiquara was not found in localities other than the igarapé Piolhinho, indicating a restricted distribution. A high number of fish species endemic to the upper Juruena, Madeira and Paraguai basins at Chapada dos Parecis were listed by Ohara and Lima (2015).…”

“…Particularly in the rio Madeira basin, five species of Characidium were described: Characidium barbosai, Flausino‐Junior, Lima, Machado & Melo, C. bolivianum Pearson, Characidium heinianum Zarske & Géry, Characidium schindleri Zarske & Géry and Characidium summum Zanata & Ohara. In addition, various species of Characidium not identified at the species level or with imprecise identification were cited to occur in the Madeira basin ( e.g ., Casatti et al ., 2013; Costa et al ., 2017; Hablützel, 2012; Ohara et al ., 2013; Vieira et al ., 2016). The high number of unidentified and possibly new species of Characidium cited in the literature, allied to the low number of species already described in the Madeira basin, indicates the poor taxonomic knowledge of the genus in that river basin.…”

Santos, 1996; Queiroz et al ., 2013a,b; Casatti et al ., 2013; Vieira et al ., 2016; Costa et al ., 2017). In the lower portions of these rivers O. fugitiva and O. nareuda also occur (Lima et al ., 2013).…”

“…The fish were then fixed in a 10% formalin solution and later preserved in 70% ethanol. Taxonomic literature and identification keys were consulted to identify species (Queiroz et al 2013;Vieira et al 2016;Ohara et al 2017). The classification follows Nelson et al (2016).…”
