The quest for sustainable solvents is currently a matter of intense research and development, as solvents significantly contribute heavily to the waste generated by chemical industries. Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) is a promising eco‐friendly solvent with valuable properties such as low peroxide formation rate, stability under basic and acidic conditions, and relatively high boiling point. This Review discusses the potential use of CPME for applications in biotechnology (e.g., biotransformations, as solvent or cosolvent), biorefineries, and bioeconomy (e.g., for furan synthesis or as an extractive agent in liquid–liquid separations), as well as for other purposes, such as chromatography or peptide synthesis. Although CPME is currently produced by petrochemical means with a remarkably high atom economy, its biogenic production can be envisaged from substrates such as cyclopentanol or cyclopentanone, which can be derived from furfural or from (bio‐based) adipic acid, respectively. The combination of the promising properties of CPME as a (co)solvent with a future (economic) biogenic origin would be advantageous for setting strategies aligned with the sustainable chemistry principles.

Furfural has been identified as an attractive platform chemical for production of valuable bio‐based chemicals and bio‐fuels. Therefore, to exploit a new catalyst which directly synthesized furfural from biomass was meaningful. In this work, FePO4⋅2H2O was novelty applied in H2O/THF solvent system to produce furfural from bamboo meal. The influence of catalyst type, solvent type, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature and times on furfural production was comparatively evaluated. The results indicated that the FePO4 catalyst displayed an excellent catalytic activity over mineral acids, metal chlorate and solid acids, achieving the highest furfural yield of 90.5% (from d‐xylose) and 83.1 mol % (from bamboo meal) at 170 °C (60 min) and 180 °C (60 min), respectively. Moreover, characterization indicated that FePO4 can recrystallize after the reaction, which provided a convenience for the catalyst recovery. Considering the excellent catalytic activity and recovering characteristic of FePO4 catalyst, systematical research of this new technique was required before the process could be considered as an industrial scale.

Microwave-Assisted Furfural Production Using Hectorites and Fluorohectorites as Catalysts

It has previously been reported that the use of microwave heating, together with the presence of co-solvents, improves the efficiency of furfural production from biomass. Solid acid catalysts can be a good alternative to mineral acids, since they can prevent corrosion and can be reused. However, the formation of humines should be minimized. Several delaminated and fluorinated hectorites, with different types and strengths of acid sites, were synthesized and tested as catalysts for the production of furfural from commercial xylose and from an acid biomass extract of almond shells. A new methodology was developed to prepare crystalline fluorohectorite at 800 • C in just 3 h. The presence of F significantly increased the acidity strength in the protonated fluorohectorite (H-FH) taking into account its high ammonia desorption temperature (721 • C). Additionally, this sample had fourteen times higher total acidity by m 2 than the reference H-βeta acid catalyst. H-FH was the most efficient catalyst at short reaction times (1 h) for the transformation of xylose to furfural under microwaves using toluene as co-solvent, regardless of whether the xylose was commercial (20% furfural yield) or an extract of almond shells (60% furfural yield). However, the acidity of the extract affected the fluorohectorite structure and composition.
