Catalytic Nanoframes and Beyond

Abstract: The ever‐increasing need for the production and expenditure of sustainable energy is a result of the astonishing rate of consumption of fossil fuels and the accompanying environmental problems. Emphasis is being directed to the generation of sustainable energy by the fuel cell and water splitting technologies. Accordingly, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts has attracted significant interest, as the fuel cell and water splitting technologies are critically dependent on their performance. “…Recently, attention has been paid to solve the instability problem in the field of NF electrocatalysts, and the introduction of structural support and construction of corner‐fortified structures have been proposed [12d,f, 14] . However, sophisticated atomic engineering is often needed, and the corrosion of support materials (usually commercial carbon black) is urge to be resolved [13, 15] . Except for the stability enhancement of the NF corners, that of the NF edges is rarely reported.…”

“…Designing noble-metal nanocrystals with frame-like structures is an effective way to improve the utilization of noblemetal atoms. 24,140 Compared with other solid structures, nanocrystals with frame-like structures exhibit excellent catalytic performance owing to their high surface-atom ratios and open structures. 79,[140][141][142] Synthesis processes for noble-metal-based nanoframes oen involve a pre-synthesized template-assisted route or an in-situ-formed template-assisted route.…”

“…Renewable-energy conversion/storage devices, such as fuel cells, [5][6][7][8][9][10] water electrolysis devices, [11][12][13][14][15] and rechargeable metal-air batteries, [16][17][18][19][20] have attracted widespread attention due to their environmental friendliness, low carbon emissions, and good device safety. Currently, noble-metal-based materials, such as Pt-, Pd-, Ru-, and Ir-based catalysts, are common catalysts for energy-related catalytic reactions, [21][22][23][24] including the alcohol oxidation reaction, formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). However, the scarcities and high prices of noble metals have limited their further commercial application.…”
