Catalytic Self‐Propulsion of Supramolecular Capsules Powered by Polyoxometalate Cargos

Abstract: Multicompartment, spherical microcontainers were engineered through a layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte deposition around a fluorescent core while integrating a ruthenium polyoxometalate (Ru4POM), as molecular motor, vis-à-vis its oxygenic, propeller effect, fuelled upon H2O2 decomposition. The resulting chemomechanical system, with average speeds of up to 25 μm s(-1), is amenable for integration into a microfluidic set-up for mixing and displacement of liquids, whereby the propulsion force and the resulting velo… Show more

“…The high propulsion velocity and facile synthesis of heptamolybdate SOM hold considerable importance in the field of active matter and can be used in future for cargo transport 34 , catalysis 35 and drug release 36 . The motility in SOMs stems from the evolution of the SO 2 gases by the oxidation of dithionite to SO 2 with concomitant reduction of Mo 7 -SOMs to molybdenum blue type SOMs.…”

“…The hydrodynamic and electrostatic forces operating at short and long distances, respectively, contribute to the reorientations and assembly of the particles. Polyelectrolyte microcapsules loaded with ruthenium polyoxometalate (Ru 4 POM) complex present another strategy to synthesize self‐propelling micromotors . Figure C illustrates the composition of the polyelectrolyte multilayer capsule with loaded Ru 4 POM complexes, prepared by the layer‐by‐layer assembly.…”

“…A tetra‐substituted Ru IV polyoxometalate with the ability to catalytically decompose H 2 O 2 into water and oxygen has also been introduced into the PEM capsules to serve as the catalyst . The Ru IV polyoxometalate Na 10 [Ru 4 (H 2 O) 4 (μ‐O) 4 (μ‐OH) 2 (γ‐SiW 10 O 36 ) 2 ] is sandwiched into the multilayer walls of the LbL‐assembled microcapsules.…”
