“…Nevertheless, ecological impacts of stormwater on Sydney estuary have been exemplified by Stark (1998) and Courtenay et al (2005), who detected significant species assemblage shifts in invertebrate communities affected by stormwater pollution. Although research has primarily focused on ecological impacts associated with contaminants delivered during high-flow conditions, base-flow is likely to have significant environmental implications since these conditions have been identified as a primary cause of elevated concentrations of metals and nutrients in sediments near stormwater drain outlets in Sydney estuary (Birch and McCready 2009).
