Cauliflower Growth and Yield in a Hydroponic System With Brackish Water

Abstract: The Brazilian semiarid is historically characterized by the water scarcity of good-quality. In this region there is great availability of groundwater reserves, however, these waters has high concentrations of dissolved salts, that makes them inappropriate to be used in the irrigation of most crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth, production and salinity tolerance of three cauliflower cultivars in hydroponics NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), subjected to different electrical conductivities… Show more

“…Hydroponic cultivation is an important alternative in the production of vegetables, due to the possibility of having greater control over production factors, especially the management of water and nutrients, besides making it possible to produce throughout the year in a greenhouse, hence being an advantageous cultivation practice for the Northeastern semi-arid conditions (LOUREIRO et al, 2019). Moreover, in the hydroponic cultivation (soilless), only the osmotic potential of the solution is considered, disregarding the matric potential that is observed in conventional cultivation in soil, so this system becomes appropriate to reduce the socioeconomic impacts caused by water scarcity in semi-arid regions (COSTA et al, 2020).…”

“…Salt stress reduces the activity of ions in solution and alters the processes of absorption, transport, assimilation, and distribution of nutrients in the plant, consequently leading to low yield [65]. Reductions in production components due to salt stress in hydroponic cultivation have also been observed in other studies with okra [66], cauliflower [67], 'biquinho' pepper [34], and zucchini [68].…”

“…Although the EC of microalgae and cattle manure was slightly higher, their application did not significantly affect the final soil EC from 2.00 to 2.00-2.01 dS m -1 . Considering that cauliflower is moderately tolerant to salinity, with an EC threshold ranging from 1.52-3.20 dS m -1 , these results suggest that the EC of organic amendments did not significantly affect cauliflower plant development (Da Costa et al, 2020). This statement is reinforced by the fact that the traditional mixed fertilizer (T1) had nonsignificant differences with T5 and T6 in terms of EC (Table 6; p > 0.05).…”
