Cause-Specific Mortality Trends Following Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract: Background While studies have demonstrated that mortality after total hip (THA) and total knee (TKA) arthroplasty is better than the general population, the causes of death are not well established. We evaluated cause-specific mortality after THA and TKA. Methods The study included population-based cohorts of patients who underwent THA (N=2019) and TKA (N=2259) between 1969 and 2008. Causes of death were classified using the International Classification Diseases 9th and 10th editions. Cause-specific standard… Show more

“…Of all 1504 patients, only a few participants were reported to withdraw for side effects, and most fluoroscopicor ultrasound-guided hip IAST procedures were very well tolerated by participants. However, whether the injection would influence the prevalence after the future THR is still under caution [27,28] and needs to be further studied.…”

“…Mortality in these patients is lower than in the general population (Michet et al. 2017 ). Our hypothesis was therefore that risk factors for mortality in these patients might appear after—and not before—surgery.…”

“…There are reports comparing mortality by each cause. 13,14 Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a well-known problem associated with osteoarthritis due to impaired mobility. Because TKA relieves pain and improves walking ability, CVD-related events are reduced in TKA patients.…”
