Causes of Death Among Infants and Children in the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Network

Abstract: ImportanceThe number of deaths of children younger than 5 years has been steadily decreasing worldwide, from more than 17 million annual deaths in the 1970s to an estimated 5.3 million in 2019 (with 2.8 million deaths occurring in those aged 1-59 months [53% of all deaths in children aged <5 years]). More detailed characterization of childhood deaths could inform interventions to improve child survival.ObjectiveTo describe causes of postneonatal child deaths across 7 mortality surveillance sentinel … Show more

“…Without a doubt, the global health community has made significant investments and taken targeted actions to address the primary causes of child death through high-impact interventions, such as access to nutrition, safe water, sanitation, and vaccination. Malnutrition and diarrheal diseases, on the other hand, continue to be among the top causes of death among children [ 58 , 59 ]. In Nigeria, there is a dearth of information on SaV’s genetic diversity, epidemiology, and evolution [ 60 ].…”

“…This is problematic as the causes of death during different ages are distinct, necessitating different interventions at each stage of life . During the early-neonatal period, most deaths occur due to preterm birth complications or intrapartum-related events, whereas malnutrition and infections are the major causes of death during late-neonatal, postneonatal, or childhood periods . The mortality risk also varies across ages during early years …”
