“…Jejunoileal fold pattern reversal, probably due to a compensatory effect of the ileum to the severe villous atrophy of the small bowel, is reported as a suggestive feature of CD [8,11]. It has also been reported that the reversal of the jejunoileal fold pattern is a common feature in barium studies, in patients with CD, and can be easily distinguished from the normal fold pattern [14].…”

“…Herlinger and Maglinte [11] and Rubesin et al [12] reported the finding of equal or less than three folds per inch in the proximal jejunum, often referred to as "colonization" [13,15], to be highly suggestive of CD. In our study population this feature was present in 30% of patients with unknown and, subsequently biopsy-proven, celiac disease, but only in 1 patient (1%) of the control group who suffered from Crohn's disease.…”

“…In the proximal jejunum, less than four folds per inch were considered abnormal, and in the distal ileum, more than four folds per inch were considered abnormal [11,12]. The average number of folds per inch in the proximal jejunum and the distal ileum then were compared to demonstrate an eventual presence of jejunoileal fold pattern reversal, i.e., fewer folds per inch in the proximal jejunum compared with the distal ileum [13, 14,15].…”

“…Disorder with extensive compromise of the small bowel can be evaluated by a fluoroscopy based small bowel follow-through study. Thus, Barlow et al have recently shown that 86% of celiac disease patients can be detected by an abnormal fold pattern consisting of a decreased number of jejunal folds and an increased number of ileal folds (jejunoileal fold pattern reversal) [177]. However, these findings are highly controversial, especially taking into consideration that endoscopic biopsy is mandatory and the procedure is highly available and specific with notable advantages.…”
