Cell therapy approaches to autism: a review of clinical trial data

Abstract: A number of clinical trials of cell therapies for autism spectrum disorder have been conducted, and some have published their outcomes. This review considers the data that have emerged from this small set of published trials, evaluates their success, and proposes further steps that could be taken if this field of endeavour is to be pursued further. A number of reservations arise from this tranche of studies, specifically the absence of identified therapeutic targets, and deficiencies in the therapeutic approac… Show more

“…25 Based on results obtained from animal research, stem cell transplantations have been conducted for children with ASD at several centers. 26 Two distinct approaches have been explored thus far in the application of cell therapy products for the treatment of ASD: culture expanded and nonexpanded. In an early example of non-cultureexpanded cell therapy, Sharma et al described the use of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) transplantation infused via intrathecal route in 32 children with ASD.…”

“…For example, MSCs have also been shown to be therapeutic for autism and meningitis, etc. [ 188 , 189 ]. An ideal cell type is not only about its therapeutic effects but also about its accessibility and cost and the time to obtain sufficient quantities.…”

“…While we were glad to see the Lancet Commission discuss the problem of dangerous pseudotreatments being promoted online, we wish to draw attention to the fact that many have been initially trialled at universities and other research institutions, or promoted by them, including 'packing' 73,74 , holding therapy 75 , secretin 76 , hyperbaric oxygen 77 , fecal transplants 78,79 , oxytocin 80 and injections of stem cells 81 , to name only a few. Clinical trials can be driven by the promise of commercialising a new "solution", and by negative bias and disdain towards autistic people.…”
