Cell wall integrity regulation across plant species

Abstract: Plant cell walls are highly dynamic and chemically complex structures surrounding all plant cells. They provide structural support, protection from both abiotic and biotic stress as well as ensure containment of turgor. Recently evidence has accumulated that a dedicated mechanism exists in plants, which is monitoring the functional integrity of cell walls and initiates adaptive responses to maintain integrity in case it is impaired during growth, development or exposure to biotic and abiotic stress. The availa… Show more

“…Cellulose accounts for approximately 20% of plant primary cell walls and approximately 50% of secondary cell walls by weight (Baez et al ., 2022 ). Almost all the genes related to cellulose synthesis were increased from Melioideae to Cedreloideae; the gene numbers of cellulose synthase A (CESA), glycosyltransferase STELLO1 (STL), cellulose synthase interactive protein (CSI) and sucrose synthetases (SUS) in T. sinensis genome were almost double of those in A. indica and M. azedarach (Figure S5 ).…”

“…Hemicellulose helps maintain the integrity and stability of the cell wall, and can account for 25% of the secondary wall's content (Baez et al, 2022;Julian and Zabotina, 2022). Hemicellulose can be divided into three classes: xylan, glucomannan and galactoglucomannan.…”

“…Thus, plant growth and morphogenesis are mechanistically controlled by the properties of cell walls. Plants have evolved signaling mechanisms to monitor the changes in the cell wall structure, thereby triggering corresponsive responses to sustain cell wall integrity (CWI) [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Changes in cell wall architecture can occur under environmental stresses or some developmental processes [ 5 ].…”

“…Firstly thought as a physical barrier that hinders the entry of the pathogen into the protoplast, the CW is also the first system that participates in the perception of the intruder upon pathogen apparition (Bacete et al, 2018; Vaahtera et al, 2019; Molina et al, 2021) and it is a metabolically-active cellular compartment in which different enzymes participate reinforcing and/or maintaining the structure (Delaunois et al, 2014; Farvardin et al, 2020). This defensive structure is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose (such as xyloglucan or xylans) and pectin (such as homogalacturonan -HG- and rhamnogalacturonan I and II –RGI and RGII-) polysaccharides, whose proportions can vary depending on the tissue and plant species and under the pressure of different biotic and abiotic stresses (Baez et al, 2022). The development of disease could be the result of the pathogen interfering with one or more of all these defensive responses.…”
