“…This correlation has not been indicated previously, but it is reasonable, because PG II is derived not only from the pyloric gland but also from the fundic gland. 2 Some previous studies 3, 8 have indicated that, besides PG I, the PG I/II ratio also reflects gastric acid secretion. The present study revealed that although this was true for the H. pylori-positive subject group, it could not be applied for the H. pylori-negative subjects.…”

“…2 Serum PG concentrations have been shown to reflect the morphological 3,4 and functional [5][6][7][8] status of the gastric mucosa. Previous studies indicated that the serum PG I level, [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] as well as the PG I/II 3,8 ratio, were positively correlated with maximal gastric output.…”

“…The latter include the aspartic proteinases cathepsin E (15) and pepsino- gens I and II, which were detected with rabbit antisera specific for each antigen (39); M1, an antigen associated with the peptide core of gastric superficial-foveolar mucin cells, using a pool of four monoclonal antibodies (2) applied to sections pretreated for 15 min with 0.004% proteinase XXIV (Sigma, St. Louis, Mo. ); M3SI, a mucin antigen expressed in small intestinal goblet cells, which was detected with mAb 64 or 168 (26) and CAR5, a mucin like antigen expressed mainly in colorectal epithelium and reacting with mAb BD5 (34).…”

“…Human pepsinogens I (PGI; coded by pepsinogen A, termed PGA) and II (PGII; coded by pepsinogen C, termed PGC) are proenzymes of pepsin (Foltmann 1981;Tang and Wong 1987;Kageyama 2002). PGI is mainly secreted from chief cells in the fundic mucosa (SamloV 1971), whereas PGII is secreted from the pyloric gland and proximal duodenal mucosa (SamloV and Liebman 1973). As for serum pepsinogen levels in gastric cancer patients, low levels of PGI and the resultant reduced PGI/PGII ratios were signiWcant compared with those in normal controls (Miki et al 1989;Ley et al 2001).…”
