ATM is the promising technology for supporting high-speed data transfer potentially suitable for all varieties of private and public telecommunications networks. IP, on the other hand, is the fast-growing internet layer protocol that is potentially applicable over any data link layer. New IP-based multimedia applications require much higher bandwidth compared to the traditional applications run over the Internet which ignited the usage of the ATM in IP networks. With the revolutionary development in wireless cellular network in recent years and the requirements of broadband data applications over the wireless channel, ATM and IP networks find their way of contribution in this underlying network. Mobility in wireless environment could however take its ultimate freedom when an integrated cellular-satellite supports the physical layer of the network. In order to provide a global mobility for the future multimedia personal terminals, thus, there is a requirement of integration of all these telecommunications technologies. Wireless ATM came to integrate the cell-switched ATM facilities in wireless environment and mobile IP has a similar goal for IP networks. IP over ATM also proposed to merge the two leading technologies of IP and ATM into a fast and efficient way of multimedia data transmission. Broadband ATM satellite systems also have been proposed in order to make the satellite channel a high-speed link for future networks. In this chapter, we will explain all these technologies and their mutual integration and then look into the issues of mobile satellites, ATM, and IP in a novel way in order to introduce the integration of the three technologies for future high-speed, global mobility-supporting, Internetcompatible wireless communication networks. We will discuss the applications and their traffic and quality of service requirements. These are crucial issues that need careful considerations for future multimedia applications over the Internet.
