Cement sheath modification using nanomaterials for long-term zonal isolation of oil wells: Review

Abstract: Well cementing is an important operation during drilling and completion of oil wells. The cement sheath must maintain well integrity behind the casing and provide long-term zonal isolation to ensure safety and prevent environmental problems. Despite recent technological advancement in smart polymeric materials, fibers and self-healing materials, it is still a big challenge to provide adequate long-term zonal isolation in severe oil well conditions. This review provides an overview of challenges faced in oil we… Show more

“…The majority of research on the mechanical performance of cement sheaths has focused on conventional cement stone properties 15 : compressive strength, tensile strength, and triaxial compressive strength 16‐19 . However, cement sheaths are subjected to pressures from the casing and formation in the wellbore; these pressures cause radial and tangential stresses inside the sheath, resulting in a complex stress state and failure 20‐22 …”

“…Such condition requires sufficient flexible cement system with high tensile strength to Young's modulus and compressive strength to Young's modulus ratios. The OPC-based system is brittle in nature and may show a weak performance at downhole condition by forming radial cracks when it is subjected to an excessive load [3][4][5]. Therefore, researchers and technology providers continuously attempt to improve the quality of set cement and the cementing operation by either new cementing techniques or introducing alternative cementitious materials for the situations that OPC has limitations [6,7].…”

“…In oil and gas well cementing, the cement slurry is filled outside the casing pipes (Li et al 2017). Thus, the sheath modification is required to maintain the well integrity behind the casing (Zeng et al 2019) and provide longterm zonal isolation to ensure the safety and prevention of environmental problems (Jafariesfad et al 2017). However, the variation of subsurface conditions such as temperature in the oilwell poses a challenge of degradation to the use of ordinary Portland cement that compromises the strength development (Omosebi et al 2017).…”
