Resumo O surgimento de mecanismos de governança privada tem sido destacado como um instrumento fundamental para evitar a flexibilização dos direitos trabalhistas e defender condições de trabalho decentes nas cadeias agrícolas. Este artigo analisa o impacto dos Padrões de Sustentabilidade Voluntária (VSSs, da sigla em inglês) nos direitos trabalhistas no setor de produção de café no Cerrado Mineiro, uma importante região produtora no Brasil. Em 2017, o Brasil passou por uma reforma abrangente de suas leis trabalhistas e instituições legais que regulam tais relações. Com base em pesquisa qualitativa utilizando dados primários e secundários, esta pesquisa investiga se os VSSs foram eficazes em preservar os direitos trabalhistas dos trabalhadores rurais em um ambiente institucional mais desregulamentado após a reforma trabalhista de 2017. Os resultados indicam que os VSSs não garantem os direitos trabalhistas e que a flexibilização das leis trabalhistas pode ameaçar os trabalhadores rurais do setor de café.

The coffee industry is one of the most important commercial value chains worldwide. Nonetheless, it is also associated to several social, economic, and environmental concerns that impair its sustainability. The present review is focused on these main sustainability concerns from the field to the coffee cup, as well as on the strategies that are being developed and/or implemented to attain sustainability and circular economy principles in the different chain segments. In this context, distinct approaches have been applied, such as sustainable certifications (e.g., voluntary sustainability standards), corporate sustainability initiatives, direct trade, relationship coffee concepts, geographical indication, legislations, waste management, and byproducts valorization, among others. These strategies are addressed and discussed throughout this review, as well as their recognized advantages and limitations. Overall, there is still a long way to go to attain the much‐desired sustainability in the coffee chain, being essential to join the efforts of all actors and entities directly or indirectly involved, namely, producers, retailers, roasters, governments, educational institutions (such as universities and scientific research institutes), and organizations.

Analyzing the local value chain in coffee-producing regions can help identify obstacles and opportunities for economic development and growth. Faced with this, the objective of the study was to analyze the value chain in the Amazon region. For which, the survey was used to collect information from producers and those involved in the value chain. To map the chain, the GIZ Value Links methodology was used; the study population was 34 producers and representatives of organizations and institutions. The coffee value chain in the Amazon region is made up of producers as the first link, after them the local collectors such as associations and cooperatives are present and in turn free trade who are the intermediary buyers. Government institutions. The main international export markets are Canada, the United States, and Germany. The main difficulty for producers is the constant coffee pests that prevent good production, along with the lack of irrigation in the plots.
