Cervicovaginal fluid cytokines as predictive markers of preterm birth in symptomatic women

Abstract: Background: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of neonatal complications and death, as well as poor health and disease later in life. Epigenetics could contribute to the mechanism underlying preterm birth. Results: Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis of whole blood cells from ten women was performed using an Illumina In nium HumanMethylation450 BeadChips array. We identi ed 1,581 differentially methylated CpG sites in promotor regions between term and preterm birth. Although the differences we… Show more

“…To date, clinicians and researchers have made great efforts to improve the identification of women at risk for PTB before its occurrence, as well as to develop therapeutics for its prevention. However, the early identification of PTB and therapy to mitigate its risk remain controversial [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…Poor conditions of the medical, social, economic and particularly differences in ethnicity are prime factors of PTB [ 6 ]. Several measures have been introduced for the monitoring of PTB, like the examination of the previous history of PTB, a short cervix (< 25 mm), vaginal pH, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6) in cervicovaginal fluid (CVF), or fetal fibronectin (FFN) analysis [ 7 , 8 ]. These measures merely offer superficial information, and are thus inadequate for the confirmation of the PTB-causing agent.…”
