Challenges and solutions in the development of vaccines against emerging and neglected infectious diseases

Abstract: Emerging and emergent infectious diseases (EIDs) represent a significant and growing cause of morbidity and mortality with increased potential for pandemics due to globalization and international trade. Challenges remain to the approach toward vaccine development for EIDs. This Special Feature explores areas related to vaccine development and testing, including unique challenges posed in the developing world. Vaccines against multiple pathogens spanning a number of viral families are explored with respect to p… Show more

“…A clinical path to successful deployment of an onchocerciasis vaccine has to take into consideration 'need, availability and cost' [126]. This breaks down into numerous factors that must be considered: The desired indication, the final target population, deployment conditions of the product, route of administration, and duration of the protective response.…”

“…11 However, to date there is no clear understanding of where innovators perceive the largest market opportunities to lie. 12 Moreover, lack of a clear overview of vaccines and technologies in development hampers new innovators to join in a concerted effort to realize solutions to public health unmet needs.…”

“…In January 2023, according to the list of NTD provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), only Dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) can be highlighted as single positive-sense RNA ones (Table 1) (Desiree LaBeaud, 2008;Martins-Melo et al, 2018). Nevertheless, many other viruses could be tracked in the category of NTD, as reviewed previously (Maslow, 2019), thus highlighting the importance of these viruses to provide a comprehensive overview of NTD. A summary of the emergence and re-emergence of RNA viruses in the 21st century is listed in Table 1.…”
